Over 55s require a different level/standard of care than those younger than them

Exercise should never be a one size fits all service, especially as we age. But when it comes to anyone over the age of 55 you're even more limited by what's on offer than everyone else.

  • Nifty fifties classes in your local gym or community centre are outdated and ineffective. 
  • Aqua aerobics classes, while very popular, are NOT what you need unless of course you plan on living under water
  • Hiring a trainer can be smart but is a 20 something year old, fresh out of college really going understand your specific needs?
  • There are a host of classes like pilates and yoga on offer but they simply give the same exercises to everyone
  • Even doctors and physiotherapists can get it so wrong and treat you as if your age is an incurable injury
  • And let's not even talk about the shocking attitude of many instructors who think all you need is to be shouted at 

Exercise should never be one size fits all. We are not all created equal. Everything from the obvious like height and weight to the not so obvious like bone structure and muscle attachments are different for you than they are for me. Then you've got to take into account your own personal history from exercise and daily movement to injury and illness. An accountant who used to play rugby will have different requirements than a building contractor who used to play hurling,  a mother of 3 whose had 3 C-sections will differ in needs from a solicitor whose recovered from breast cancer.

My appreciation for this developed back in 2001 after injurying my back playing rugby and it was reinfoced when I had to rehab after a motor bike accident in 2003. I couldn't just do the generic exercises everyone else was doing in the gym. After spending years studying and learning so I could help myself I started helping others. People who had been in accidents, had joint replacements, back operations, parkinsons disease and cancer survivours to name a few. People who were in pain and struggled to do basic tasks like putting on their socks or getting out of a chair. People resigned to having to give up hobbies like gardening and hiking let alone be able to enjoy sports like golf or tennis.

From my discussions with these clients, about what they had tried before, I was shocked to discover the lack of care many had been given. Doctors who told them it was simply their age.

Instructors giving them the wrong exercises and advice.

Physios who've done nothing except create a sense of dependance for them. It's not unusual for a new client to tell me they've been seeing the same therapist weekly for months on end. 

I consider myself lucky to have had the debilitaing injuries I've had. It's given me an invaluable understanding into what the human body needs as it ages. And understanding I would never have gotten if I spent my 20s pain and care free.

From working with thousands of people (that's not an exaggeration, I started training people before Facebook was around) I've created 3 principles around how to exercise for longevity and quality of life

And so I set out to be able to help as many people as I could. As a personal traininer i was only able to help a small number of people. So I set up a personal fitness centre in Rathfarnham, Dublin where we specialise in custom plans no matter what your age or injury history is. I've extensively trained our coaches to become experts in coaching people with differing needs.

One of the biggest regrets our members have is not starting sooner.

Before they joined they tended to have a preconcieved idea of what it would be like. And I don't blame them. There's so much crap out there it's hard to find the right service for you. Till now.

They were fearfull, apprehensive, lacked confidence, unsure and sometimes embarrassed.

Assess Don't Guess -  Pay attention to what's happening and adjust as needed. 

The 1% rule - Focus on small improvements. Going from 0 to 100% is unnecessary and counterproductive. That no pain no gain idea is nonsense
